Narsil
(Quenya: sun-moon) The mighty sword of Elendil, forged by Telchar of Nogrod in the Fist Age. Narsil broke and its light was extinguished when Elendil fell in SA 3441 while fighting Sauron; Isildur used the hilt to cut the One Ring from Saurons finger. Brought back to Arnor by Ohtar, the Shards of Narsil were one of the heirlooms of the Line of Isildur; Elrond foretold that the sword would not be reforged until Sauron rose again and the One Ring was found. After the fall of the North-kingdom the shards of Narsil were kept in Imladris. Elrond presented Narsil to Aragorn II when he came of age, and on the eve of the War of the Ring the sword was reforged and named Anduril. |

Glamdring
(Sindarin: foe-hammer) Glamdring, known to may as the sword of Gandalf the Grey, was originally made by the Elves of Gondolin for the Wars of Beleriand, and was worn by Turgon. After the Fall of Gondolin however, Glamdring eventually found its way into a troll-hoard, to be discovered by Gandalf in TA 2941. Mithrandir used the sword from then forth until the end of the great War of the Ring. But it is not said if he took Glamdring over the Sea with him. As with all such weapons, Glamdring shone with a blue light in the presence of Orcs. It should also be mentioned that it was the mate of Orcrist. |
Sting
This well forged knife was made in Beleriand in the First Age, but named Sting by the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins. As other of the kind, Sting shone with a blue light when Orcs were near. Bilbo found Sting in a troll-cave during the expedition of Thorin and Company, and therefrom both he and his cousin Frodo used it as a sword throughout their adventures. Frodo later gave the sword to Sam in the Tower of Cirith Ungol, after Sam had seriously wounded Shelob with it. |

Orcrist
(Sindarin: goblin cleaver) Orcrist was last worn by Thorin Oakenshield, and was the mate of Glamdring. Although it was taken from Thorin during his imprisonment in the halls of Thranduil, Orcrist was later placed on his tomb, after Oakenshield was slain in the Battle of the Five Armies, where it warned the Dwarves of Erebor of the approach of any enemy. Biter was its name among the foul Orcs.

Anglachel
(Sindarin: iron-flame) Sword of meteoritic iron, one of a pair forged by Eol, who gave it to Elwe in return for permission to dwell in Nan Elmoth. Despite Melians warning that the malice of Eol was in the sword, Beleg took Anglachel from the armoury of Menegroth when he went to search for Turin the second time, and Turin unknowingly slew Beleg with it. Turin had the sword reforged in Nargothrond and renamed it Gurthang. With this blade Turin performed great deeds, but he also used it for rash and senseless murders, and in time he turned the blade on himself. Gurthang broke as it killed him, and the shards were laid next to Turins body. Anglachel was black and very hard; the edges of the reforged Gurthang shone with a pale fire. The sword was apparently sentient.

Belthronding
Belthronding, the great bow of Beleg was made out of black yew-wood, and was buried with him after he was slain by the unknowing Turin. |
Grond
Also known as the Hammer of the Underworld, Grond served as Morgoths great mace, and with it he killed Fingolfin, second son of Finwe, king of the Noldor in Beleriand. "Then Morgoth hurled aloft Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld, and swung it down like a bolt of thunder". |

Ringil
(Sindarin: cold star) The sword of Fingolfin with which he wounded Morgoth in single combat following the Dagor Bragollach. |
Gurthang
The black sword of Turin Turambar. Gurthang was reforged by the smiths of Narothrond from the remains of a sword originally belonging to Eol the Dark Elf. |

Aeglos
(snow-point) The spear of Gil-galad, wielded by the high-king in the War of the Last Alliance. |
Angrist
(Iron-cutter)This was the knife made by Telchar of Nogrod and borne in the First Age by Curufin the son of Feanor. It was taken from him by Beren, who used it to cut free a Silmaril from the Iron Crown of Morgoth. |

Anguirel
One of a pair of iron-cutting swords forged by Eol, the Dark Elf, from an iron meteorite. Anguirel's mate was Anglachel, which was given to Thingol in payment for leave to dwell in Nan Elmoth and that sword went on to perform many mighty deeds - reforged as Gurthang, it was the sword that Turin used to kill Glaurung.
Anguirel's history is far more mysterious. The only specific detail we have is that Eol kept it for himself, but it was stolen by his son Maeglin. This must have happened when Maeglin and his mother Aredhel fled Nan Elmoth for Gondolin, so presumably the sword was taken to Turgon's Hidden City. What became of it after that is unknown.
